On their own, without the guidance of their professors or the protection of Professor Dumbledore, the three friends must now rely on one another more than ever. But there are Dark Forces in their midst that threaten to tear them apart. Meanwhile, the wizarding world has become a dangerous place for all enemies of the Dark Lord. The long-feared war has begun and Voldemort's Death Eaters seize control of the Ministry of Magic and even Hogwarts, terrorizing and arresting anyone who might oppose them. But the one prize they still seek is the one most valuable to Voldemort: Harry Potter. The Chosen One has become the hunted one as the Death Eaters search for Harry with orders to bring him to Voldemort...alive. Harry's only hope is to find the Horcruxes before Voldemort finds him. But as he searches for clues, he uncovers an old and almost forgotten tale -- the legend of the Deathly Hallows. And if the legend turns out to be true, it could give Voldemort the ultimate power he seeks. Little does Harry know that his future has already been decided by his past when, on that fateful day, he became "the Boy Who Lived." No longer just a boy, Harry Potter is drawing ever closer to the task for which he has been preparing since the day he first stepped into Hogwarts: the ultimate battle with VoldemortUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-5451978355628914312010-05-25T01:32:00.000-07:002010-05-25T01:32:00.263-07:00Furry Vengeance movie<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/S_eXwQDA-XI/AAAAAAAABJE/R6EANYCa_x0/s320/furry-vengeance-movie.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474010727289256306" />
A real estate mogul (Brendan Fraser) goes head-to-head with a group of furry critters looking to protect their forest from development in this Summit Entertainment/Participant Media co-production. Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) is well aware that her biological clock is ticking, but she just can't find the type of guy she'd want to settle down and start a family with. Eventually, she makes the decision to become a single mother. The very same day that Zoe is artificially inseminated, however, she meets Stan (Alex O'Loughlin), a single charmer whom she thinks would make a great father. While at first Zoe struggles to hide her condition from Stan, before long there's no denying the truth and she decides to spill the beans. Much to her surprise, Stan responds enthusiastically, announcing that he's in it for the long haul. Over the course of the next nine months, Zoe and Stan enter into a whirlwind romance, begin drawing up wedding plans, and mapping out the rest of their lives together. Muriel Newkom is 13-year-old Sandra, a newcomer in her suburb, whose parents' marriage is gradually beginning to wear thin. She spends long afternoons on her bicycle, riding around the housing development, and it is on one of those treks that she happens upon the wallet of local boy Mike (Andreas Eberle) - a handsome classmate from her school. No stranger to familial dysfunction himself, Mike struggles with an alienated and confused mother, Kathrin (Sabine Berg), still reeling from the unexpected death of her daughter. Sandra and Mike instantly develop a strong rapport and begin to fall for one another, but Sandra faces romantic rivalry from the class prima donna, Nadja (Marina Guerrini) who also fancies the boy's affections. Moreover, an unforeseen complication develops when Mike's mother and Sandra's father not only begin an affair, but turn up together in a car - little knowing that the kids are hiding in the back seat - and Sandra neglects to tell Mike that the lover in question is her father. Luif co-scripted this film with Micha Lewinsky; it gains a historic footnote as one of the first mainstream Swiss features shot on high-definition video.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-49573280865885637392010-05-23T01:23:00.000-07:002010-05-22T01:25:02.804-07:00Just Wright Movie<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/S_eUyIhfRZI/AAAAAAAABIc/XSXeR19COko/s320/just-wright-movies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474007461094442386" />
Just Wright MovieUnknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-9998989453325056892010-05-23T01:22:00.000-07:002010-05-23T01:22:00.236-07:00Letter to Juliet Movies<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/S_eUa2iYctI/AAAAAAAABIU/enDWhE7zdIk/s320/letter-to-juliet-movies.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5474007061129360082" />
An American girl discovers a love letter that changes her life in this romantic comedy starring Amanda Seyfried and Vanessa Redgrave. David is the first to realize that there are things lurking in the mist…deadly, horrifying things…creatures not of this world. Survival depends on everybody in the store pulling together…but is that possible, given human nature? As reason crumbles in the face of fear and panic, David begins to wonder what terrifies him more: the monsters in the mist—or the ones inside the store, the human kind, the people that until now had been his friends and neighbors?

Movie Review:

The Mist is unbelievably bad its shameful. When I see The Mist register a 70 percent on Rotten Tomatoes I despair. Maybe I wrapped a scarf around my head and wept. I am a big fan of The Green Mile and I respect Darabont for The Shawshank Redemption but The Mist is one of the most obscene cases of blind, obnoxious track-record worshipping ever. Darabont screwed The Mist. Period. It is near impossible to justify a script and screenplay so blinkered and bigoted, so naively abysmal that its plays worse than a B-grade horror that everyone uses to justify its existence. Even standard B-grade fare produce relatively brainless fare with intellectual understanding of their own intent and purpose. The Mist tries so hard to be preachy, scary, sophisticated the only scary thing is how someone could achieve so little with so much at hand. (In Darabont's case, a seemingly proven talent, creativity and movie magic inspiration.)

The Mist had no characters in the film. Really. The "characters" were such horrendous caricatures they were literally stand up cardboard figures with name tags like "guy with a huge chip on shoulder" or "stupid, shrieking bimbotic female" on them. In fact they were so real and life-like I for a moment feared a grey haired cardboard collecting auntie would trundle in, box them in, fold them up and cart them away to the nearest recycling centre. A man runs into the supermarket, blood stained, amidst a spreading mist and shrieking voices of death and despair, warning the trapped townsfolk of the impending pestilence, death and decay. Sounds like a good start to story? Yeah.

Yeah right.

Barely hours later, stereotyped alpha male blue collared workers work up a fit when the lead caricature David Drayton annoys them by telling them not to go out. Yes. "Don't think 'cos you're educated" tripe takes centrestage as they insist on going out of the supermarket to fix, of all things, a choked vent of a generator that's smoking. Worse still, the generator, turned off by the lead caricature a few minutes prior and it shut down the lights to...the storeroom. Yes. non even the entire supermarket. I.e. useless generator. That's the kind of conversation, scripting and lines that will permeate the entire movie. David's lawyer neighbour blows up accusing him of lying about monsters in order to get back at a lawsuit that he filed against David. What? Yeah go figure.

David holds lights to the supermarket glass at night and tons of gigantic bugs flutter to the glass and tries to break them. After glass almost and eventually breaks, caricature declares - "they're attracted to light!"

You want cheap horror? In a bid to find weapons to fend off the monsters, one man goes to a truck to retrieve a shotgun. A rope is tied to him as he walks, only for it to fly into the air as he is chomped up by the monsters. Guess what? "Hero" pulls the rope back to supermarket, only to see lower torso. Every one screams. Hero continues pulling. Everyone screams louder. Maybe hero wants a better view. Continues pulling.

Ms. Carmody, the prophecy spewing "Christian" takes the cake in the movie. Her character is so insensitively offensive it is almost hate inducing. Portrayed to insanely annoying levels by Marcia Gay Harden, she embodies all the "stereotyped" nuances of modern Pentecostal evangelists it takes up a good three quarter chunk of the movie. The attempted religious undertones, possibly speaking out against George Bush's religiously slanted war-mongering (Darabont admits speaking out against modern America) were so poorly developed, crassly portrayed that it bordered on irresponsibility and irrationality. The movie was an extravagant indulgence of misplaced plot devices, sequences and terrible storytelling. Imagine this - the character was so bad that members of the audience were deviating towards anti-Christian cursings and the entire theatre roared in cheers and applauded when the woman is confronted by the "good guys in the movie". Is this the social commentary Darabont wanted to achieve?

Cheesy special effects, music, horribly laughable attempts at suspense, emotions are the bane of the entire movie. The last 15 minutes of the film were utter tripe and cinematographic shame. If not for the fact that I would be banished to spoilerville if i attempted to criticise the obscenely atrocious and abysmal attempts at passing this off as a movie, I would have ripped it to shreds. Mercilessly. Like this ridiculously bug looking things did to the caricatures in the movie.

I write this out of sadness rather than anger. Darabont? I don't quite know what happened to basic film sensibilities when a movie like The Mist can be given any semblance of plaudits. If you think scripting and directing that spits in the face of the simple rule of "show not tell", one that shows you how not to make a thoughtful film fills your cinematic hunger, then by all means feast on the visual diarrhoea of Darabont. Otherwise, with the exception of it being decently budget (decently budgeted, not decent) film production quality that at least trudges from start to finish, The Mist is one show I wouldn't recommend to anyone. Or anything.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-47506347027428819122008-02-06T23:14:00.000-08:002008-02-06T23:17:31.985-08:00Rambo 4<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp2.blogger.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/R6qwWRAJpoI/AAAAAAAAALI/rQV3JjdGyEc/s200/rambo.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164133819301340802" />
Genre: Action/Adventure
Director: Sylvester Stallone
Cast: Sylvester Stallone, Julie Benz, Paul Schulze, Matthew Marsden, Graham McTavish, Rey Gallegos, Tim Kang, Jake LaBotz, Maung Maung Khin, Ken Howard
RunTime: 1 hr 33 mins
Released By: UIP
Rating: M18 (Violence)
Official Website: http://movies.break.com/rambo/

Synopsis:

Twenty years after the last film in the series, John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) has retreated to northern Thailand, where he's running a longboat on the Salween River. On the nearby Thai-Burma (Myanmar) border, the world's longest-running civil war, the Burmese-Karen conflict, rages into its 60th year. But Rambo, who lives a solitary, simple life in the mountains and jungles fishing and catching poisonous snakes to sell, has long given up fighting, even as medics, mercenaries, rebels and peace workers pass by on their way to the war-torn region.

That all changes when a group of human rights missionaries search out the "American river guide" John Rambo. When Sarah (Julie Benz) and Michael Bennett (Paul Schulze) approach him, they explain that since last year's trek to the refugee camps, the Burmese military has laid landmines along the road, making it too dangerous for overland travel. They ask Rambo to guide them up the Salween and drop them off, so they can deliver medical supplies and food to the Karen tribe. After initially refusing to cross into Burma, Rambo takes them, dropping off Sarah, Michael and the aid workers...

Less than two weeks later, pastor Arthur Marsh (Ken Howard) finds Rambo and tells him the aid workers did not return and the embassies have not helped locate them. He tells Rambo he's mortgaged his home and raised money from his congregation to hire mercenaries to get the missionaries, who are being held captive by the Burmese army. Although the United States military trained him to be a lethal super soldier in Vietnam, decades later Rambo's reluctance for violence and conflict are palpable, his scars faded, yet visible. However, the lone warrior knows what he must do...

Movie Review:

I can fully comprehend if you don’t understand the existence of John Rambo or Rambo 4 in this review context. For God’s sake, the man has been around for ages in cinematic history since 1982 to be precise. Many young cinema-goers won’t have much idea about the character Rambo perhaps the sheer mention of the name Sylvester Stallone might still ring a bell.

As a Vietnam War veteran, Rambo in the past had been recruited for secret operations and has even fought the Soviets but for now, he is living in recluse in Thailand, catching snakes and collecting scrap metal for a living. That is until a group of Christian missionaries enlisted the help of Rambo to transport them to Burma where the merciless Burmese military rule. No prizes for those who managed to guess what will happen in the second act.

Stallone who co-wrote the script infused real-life documentary footages of the atrocities committed by the Burmese/Myanmar military during the opening of the movie. Rape, villagers being brutally killed and shots of highly-decomposed bodies are just some of the highlights. This is enough to capture your attention. Effectively, Rambo 4 is a one-man mission against many. Which instalment of the Rambo series is not?

However with one exception this time round, the mission seem genuinely real. John Rambo is fighting an existing enemy. You heard of missing missionaries and people being captured by militias in the news all the time. And Stallone never shy from the reality. The level of carnage here is not for the squeamish. Bodies being blown up by landmines and dismembered limbs are everywhere. There’s even a shot of a child being bayonet. You get the picture.

Last year, Stallone manages to redeem his flagging career with the success of “Rocky Balboa”. But with “Rambo 4”, the message is never clear, it started out on an educational tone but ended with a 30 minutes finale that will make “Saving Private Ryan” and even the “Saw” franchises look even tamer than a lion.

By the time the credits rolled, all you remembered you just walked down memory lane with an old friend, John Rambo accompanied with the familiar themes from the late Jerry Goldsmith. Yes his trademark bow and arrows are still around. John Rambo uttered the words, “Live for nothing or die for something”. This perhaps best sum up Stallone’s way of ending this well-known franchise.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-24067321680215171972008-02-06T17:15:00.000-08:002008-02-06T17:17:09.955-08:00The Flock<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp0.blogger.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/R6pcBxAJpnI/AAAAAAAAAK8/27yEUUhPRno/s200/flock.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164041108137289330" />

Genre: Thriller
Director: Andrew Lau
Cast: Richard Gere, Claire Danes, Avril Lavigne
RunTime: 1 hr 45 mins
Released By: GV

Synopsis:

In the vein of suspense thrillers like SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and SEVEN, that deal with fringe members of society, THE FLOCK, the first English language film from noted Hong Kong director Andrew Lau (INFERNAL AFFAIRS), follows the story of Errol Babbage, a burned out peace officer who’s being forced out of his job monitoring paroled sex offenders after18 years. Employing an unorthodox style Babbage, anything but a by-the-book agent, has clearly rubbed his superiors the wrong way and in his last weeks on the job is assigned to train a young female replacement. When a teenage girl goes missing Babbage is convinced one of the convicted sexual predators that he monitors is responsible, but no one believes him. Training his young protégé to go beyond the bounds of normal procedure Babbage has the duo delve directly into the sordid world of his depraved FLOCK. The trainee, and the audience, cannot be sure if Babbage is the only agent truly committed to saving the girl or a man who has gone too deep into the abyss he’s been existing on the edge of for years.

Movie Review:

You direct a cop drama trilogy that redefines Hong Kong cinema. A certain award-winning filmmaker named Martin Scorsese decides to give it Hollywood treatment and the adaptation goes on to win heaps of Oscars. A production company approaches you to direct your first Hollywood movie. And why is there still no confirmed release date in the United States for your movie?

Frankly, we are not too sure ourselves why Hong Kong director Andrew Lau’s (Infernal Affairs, Initial D) first Hollywood project isn’t getting much hype in Hollywood. Could it be the dark and shady themes of sex offences the movie touches on? Could it be the lack of financing by the production company for publicity and distribution? Could it be, gasp, that the Americans are not too fond of Lau’s filmmaking style?

The suspense thriller tells the story of an overly watchful federal agent who takes on a case of a missing girl just before he is about to retire. He is certain that the unfortunate incident is connected to a paroled sex offender. Along comes his young understudy whom he takes along for the ride to unravel a series of nerve-cracking and twisted truths.

The world-weary agent is played by Richard Gere (Chicago, Shall We Dance?) with mature affection. The knowledgeable but stubborn character of the experienced cop can be a difficult portrayal, but Gere grasps it well enough to make the audiences empathize with him. And after shining in this year’s Evening and Stardust, Claire Danes takes on the role of the young agent, and makes us even more impressed with her versatility as an actress. Also, watch out for the amusing performance by rock chick Avril Lavigne (Fast Food Nation, Over the Hedge) as a drugged victim of a sex offender. Supporting roles are also aptly played by KaDee Strickland (Fever Pitch) and Ray Wise (Good Night, and Good Luck),

With such a fine cast to work with, how could the movie possibly go wrong?

The sensational subjects of the movie will delight the thrill-seekers, keeping them at the edge of their seats as the protagonists uncover one sick clue after another. Look out for the sequence that takes place in the S/M sex chamber – it will send chills down the spines of the weak-hearted. The twists and turn of the story written by Hans Bauer (Anacondas 2) and Craig Mitchell (Highwaymen) are engaging enough to keep you awake throughout the movie’s 105-minute runtime, though it may seem unfocused at times. The snazzy editing punctuated by quick cuts and grainy insertions remind us of Lau’s own Infernal Affairs trilogy, and flashily stylish approaches like this will probably please the MTV generation.

After listing out all these commendable points of the movie and who they’d appeal to, we still can’t figure out why the film wasn’t able to secure a distributor in the United States. Maybe it’s just the fact that this production wasn’t exactly the smoothest of rides for the filmmakers – we read somewhere director Niels Mueller (The Assassination of Richard Nixon) was called in for re-shoots, and was eventually not credited.Unknownnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7522722063412916345.post-15903262234781624762008-02-06T17:12:00.000-08:002008-02-06T17:14:28.095-08:00Assassination of Jesse James<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://bp3.blogger.com/_v2C-A_eFR8M/R6pbYhAJpmI/AAAAAAAAAK0/wJ8pUzQxoLA/s200/The_Assasination.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5164040399467685474" />

Genre: Action/Adventure and Western
Director: Andrew Dominik
Cast: Brad Pitt, Casey Affleck, Sam Shepard, Mary-Louise Parker, Jeremy Renner, Paul Schneider, Sam Rockwell
RunTime: 2 hrs 40 mins
Released By: Warner Bros
Rating: NC-16 (Some Violence and Brief Sexual References)
Official Website: http://www.jessejamesmovie.com

Opening Day: 24 January 2008

Synopsis:

An action western surrounding the private life and public exploits of America's most notorious outlaw, Jesse James. As the charismatic and unpredictable outlaw plans his next great robbery, he wages war on his enemies, who are trying to collect the reward money--and the glory--that is riding on his capture. However, the greatest threat to Jesse's life may ultimately come from those he trusts the most.

Movie Review:

The dissipations of facades and masquerades come to the fore in the ponderously titled “The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford”. Jesse James (Brad Pitt) tempers his blood reign over railroads and dusty towns with his guise as charming businessman Thomas Howard, substituting his inherent savagery for normalcy, gunslinging for churchgoing and gang for family. But that life will always be too much to ask from the restless James. A lifetime of cruelty and lawlessness leaves him the desire for martyrdom, one lasting act of infamy. Robert Ford (a pitch perfect Casey Affleck), the sycophantic young upstart to James’ gang and driven by his idolatry of his waning hero in James, seeks celebrity in the same way he incites it by introducing himself as a man "destined for great things". The eventual evanescence of this romanticised illusion leads to the nascent of pride and envy. The sudden act of psychosis (arguably by both parties) that leads to the film’s key marquee placement triggers the celebrity Ford craves which at once dispels the myth of both men while nonetheless immortalising them.

At a wizened 34 years of age, the fatigued James settles into iconic deification. An outlaw outweighed by the tides of legend and the tales of courage magnified by an audience enraptured by true stories of crime. Notoriety and celebrity bleed into each other. The idea carries a purview of our contemporary cultural import of fame and its cults of personalities. Writer-director Andrew Dominik is careful not to devolve its own overtextualised, and highly subjective mythos into filmic pablum. The attention to detail in the characters is frequently enriched with elements of fatalism until the ruptured fabrics of their environment are revealed through the pas de deux that transpires between James and Ford.

Dominik invokes the most prominent of all betrayals. Ford emerges as a cravenly Judas, slaying the one he professes undying love for. As the borderlines between passion and envy merge and fade into each other, it becomes clear that its plaintive pitch of veneration reaches into a reservoir of psychology gripping the two men from the moment James succumbs to his resurgent vanity. Arched by its metaphysical approach to its cinematography, it resonates the loaded relationship shared between them. The vast Midwestern fields during the 1880s provide the stage as dissonance is contemplated as an inevitable response to treachery.

Literally one long epilogue, Dominik bookends this sorrowful story of endings and beginnings with a credo of blood ties. And at an overextended 160 minutes, the film bears witness to more than just its eponymous killers. Insights abound in its narrative sprawl, from Robert’s brother Charley (Sam Rockwell) to Jesse’s own kin, Frank (Sam Shepard). Steeped in its own conceptual enigma, Dominik ruminates, very slowly and sombrely on strained dynamics and popular culture. Seeping pathos into a visually extravagant canvas, Dominik tells a brutally honest tale on the price of iconography and opportunely creates an antidote for the balefully emblematic and misbegotten “American Gangster”.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com
